do i have to fast while travelling?

Short answer

No. A traveller may skip the fast and make up the days later, any time before the next Ramadan. The Quran names the traveller, alongside the sick, as someone the fast is lifted from. The concession is a kindness; you are allowed to take it.

If you'd rather fast and it won't strain you, most scholars say that's valid too.

The Quran names the traveller, alongside the sick, as someone who can pause the fast and make the days up later, any time before the next Ramadan (Quran 2:185). The concession is a kindness, and the Prophet took it himself on journeys. Most schools set the qualifying distance around a day's journey (commonly about 80 km) with a stay short enough that you are not settled. A fast kept while travelling remains valid for most scholars, and is fine when it doesn't strain you; when the road is hard, breaking it is better.

what counts as travelling? Schools differ

if you choose to fast anyway

A fast kept while travelling is valid for most scholars, and fine when it doesn't strain you. If the trip is hard (long segments, heat, little sleep), breaking it is better.

When do I make up the missed days?

Any time before the next Ramadan, together or spread out. If a valid excuse continues, scholars discuss what follows; ask locally.

Does a short commute count as travel?

No. Daily commuting within your city is not the travel the concession means, by agreement.

What about breaking a fast mid-journey?

If travel begins during a fasting day, most schools say complete that day; the Hanbalis allow breaking once travel truly begins.
